About Flyworld-old

Hi, I'm Dan Ivanoff, father of 2 beautiful girls, passionate fly tyer, fly fisherman and owner of FlyWorld.

Built from the ground up by Chris Dunham, FlyWorld has been servicing the Australian fly fishing community for more than 20 years!! We are based in Bayswater, Perth and cater not only to Western Australia but to fly fishers throughout Australia, New Zealand and indeed the world!

I purchased the business back in April of 2017 and what a rollercoaster it has been! Without a doubt, the greatest thrill of this Journey has been joining flyfisho's from every level of experience through their journey. What a privilege.

A bit about me.

My fishing background has been diverse. From early beginnings with trout in the Tumut district of NSW, I was quick to take on fresh challenges and soon found a new passion with chasing Bass in the Hawkesbury and Nepean rivers. Land-based game fishing the rock ledges of Jarvis Bay was the next thrill, then after a 9-month stint trouting in Orange, NSW, I was offered a position as "Field-Based Research Assistant" on prawn farms in the Cairns region. The next 5 years were loaded with adventures on the Barrier reef, Central QLD, the Daintree rainforest and Cape York. Fun Times!

Tasmania was the next chapter and stalking big brown trout in the backcountry Western lakes was the new kick, although I certainly spent my fair share of time in the tiny creeks, coastal lagoons and even chasing giant Bluefin Tuna in the Tasman Penisula.

Whilst in Tasmania, I had several jobs, including Environmental Chemist, managing an environmental monitoring laboratory, managing a trout and salmon hatchery, fish stocking, and quality assurance officer. Busy, diverse times and fun times!

Life has a funny way of turning upside-down, inside-out and back-to-front and sometimes it all happens at the same time! A difficult family situation all of a sudden put me Perth, WA. Things were tough for a while and I hit pretty close to rock bottom! So what does any irrational fly fishing nutcase do when down and out? Buy a fly shop of course!! What a great turn of events!

Here in WA, I sneak around some of the small brooks and dams chasing trout. I fish locally for the usual suspects of bream, flathead, herring and tailor and I really look forward to the annual migration of huge Australian salmon. However, a true addiction of mine shines every bright sunny summers day where you'll find me stalking the local sand flats with the 3 weight for whiting. Love it, love it all!

There is so much of WA yet to explore but have been greatful to have already sampled some phenominal waters of SW WA, Cocos Island, Exmouth and the Dampier Archepelego. Shark bay is next on the WA hit list!

Meet the rest of the team

Tony Ong
Tony is a passionate saltwater fly fisho, fly tier and Secretary of the Saltwater Fly Rodders of WA. His knowledge and experience in saltwater fly fishing is first rate and he is a top bloke to boot. Tony has been apart of the WA fly scene since it's infancy and has no doubt been a driving force in the growth of the sport in WA.

Here in Australia, Tony targets everything from the bread and butter estuarine species through to the northern exotics and bluewater pelagics. Internationally, Tony has fished several world-class fisheries including, Kula Rompin, Christmas Island, Florida Keys and New Zealand.

On the Bench, Tony is an exceptional tier and ties many of the saltwater patterns sold through FlyWorld. To see some of his work, check out the collection of his flies here.

Peter Taylor
Pete is a board member on the Western Australian Trout and Freshwater Angling Association and now loves fishing and exploring WA’s south-west trout waters. Pete has lived and fished many places around the globe including, Exmouth, British Columbia,

A big thanks to both Tony and Pete for helping me maintain a tricky work/family balance.

Running a fly fishing store makes little sense in this modern internet-based shopping climate and trust me when I say, "this is no easy route to early retirement"! It is, however, a most rewarding lifestyle, full of passion, energy, friendship, travel, learning and fun. The true reward, however, has been in teaching and sharing our beautiful sport and this is a big aspect of where I see FlyWorld moving forward in the future.

Behind the scences we have an amazing network of keen flyfisho's backing us up. If we don't have the answers, then there usually just a phone call away.

For those new to the game and looking for some solid advice, be sure to make contact. My hope is to give you the back-up that ensures the new fly rod doesn't spend its life in the closet! For those well versed in the game, join us in stretching the limits and lets take fly fishing to the next level! We are always learning and sharing. For everyone in-between jump in and enjoy the ride, we'll back you up wherever needed.

Cheers,

Dan Ivanoff
